Robert C. Merton and Andrew W. Lo teach three new courses in practical finance in the Master of Finance program during spring 2011. Professor Merton's courses apply finance science and financial engineering to two diverse areas of interest. One course concentrates on the design and management of global financial institutions, markets and the financial system. The other focuses on retirement finance, life-cycle investing and asset management. Professor Lo's new course studies the practical aspects of the analytics of finance. All of the topics covered will be developed in the context of a specific quantitative equity trading strategy to provide students with a clearer and more stimulating sense of industry practice. Robert C. Merton is School of Management Distinguished Professor of Finance and the recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Economics for the Black-Scholes-Merton options pricing model. Andrew W. Lo is the director of the MIT Laboratory for Financial Engineering and recipient of countless awards, including the Graham and Dowd award and the 2001 IAFE-SunGard Financial Engineer of the Year, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
